Roots Manuva, Slime & Reason

Three long time on from the dark that was Awfully Deep, Stockwell's Rodney Smith returns. In an genre dominant with up-and-coming MCs all vying to knock the crown from the head of stream rulers of the mic, such a gap may seem like a suicidal career move. But when you're as original, interesting and well, deep as Mr Manuva the usual rules don't apply. Slime & Reason should shut up any young pretenders out at that place, at least for a while.

Of path another reason for the hiatus has been Smith's not-so-private battles with his own demons. Those apprehensive that his flow has been...erm...blunted by indulgence volition be relieved at the first playact of this many-sided album. Jauntily delivery a muscular slice of Studio One deep remnant and dancehall smarts to the opener Over And Over, it seems like Roots has had time to lighten up up as well. That's not to say that he doesn't address personal issues. It's Me Oh Lord inside information his struggles trying to preach the gospels of truth and light. The pentecostal strand learned in childhood rings as loud as ever here. And On I'm A New Man he makes atonement for past times indulgences.

As if to signal his awareness of the post-pubescent competition he does upgrade the sound somewhat. There are more burbling parallel synth sounds and the mix is sparser, relying on the bass to carry you through. Oddly it's this head drooping towards newer hybrids that mark the album's broken points. The Toddla T-assisted Buff Nuff visits the same priapic territory that Dizzee Rascal's recently visited. But urban music's about asserting your pedigree and as he points out in that fabulous mocknee growl on Well Alright, "They got a little chatter but they got no brain". Elsewhere the string-led R'n'B of A Man's Talk is only too squarely hip hop compared to the other delights on offer here.

But it's really the Carribean flvours of the hilarious Do Nah Bodda Mi or the dubwise Well Alright that show that his pen is just as sharp as it was. As incessantly, the man serves up a fulgent mixture of fun, doomy retribution, guilt-ridden dread and loping oddness. Welcome back Rodney...

Jason Segel, Paul Rudd Take Their Bromance To The Golf Course On 'I Love You, Man' Set

Jason Segel is having a good year. First came "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," which cemented the actor as one of comedy's newest talents. Then came word that he was the man chosen to resurrect the Muppets franchise by writing and starring in their newest adventure. Soon after, Segel was tapped for his second leading role, in the upcoming comedy "I Love You, Man" alongside Paul Rudd.

But with the movie industry proclaiming its love for Segel, when was the last time he had a chance to say those magic words to someone else?

"This morning, to Paul Rudd, when he was rubbing my crotch with a golf club," Segel laughed. "We've been doing it every five minutes or so."

MTV News caught up with Segel and Rudd at a Los Angeles golf course where the two were filming a scene for their upcoming bromance, the story of an about-to-be married guy who "finds out that he doesn't really have a close friend in his life to be a best man, so he sets out to find one," Segel explained. "That would be me."

In this particular scene, their budding friendship inspires the pair to play golf and subsequently slow up the whole course trying to teach Paul's fiancée how to play.

"Paul convinces me to go out on a double date with him and his fiancée [played by Rashida Jones] and her friend Hailey [Sarah Burns], but I don't like to golf with women in the movie," Segel said.

Which sounds easy enough on paper: a couple of swings, a couple of shots, a couple of takes, and they're out. But each time we watched a new take, it seemed to come from a different movie, thanks to radical improvisations from Segel and Rudd on everything from the Dalai Lama to short shorts.

Watching the pair endlessly riff off each other, it's easy to say that art imitates life in this film, where Segel's and Rudd's characters ultimately become the other's most supportive presence, but the cliché is true. Both actors, for instance, stayed in front of the camera at all times (even when they weren't in a particular shot) in order to throw ad-libbed lines to the other.

With no breaks, it becomes a hard way to make an easy living, joked Rudd.

So what has this collaborative movie taught them about what makes a best friend? Is it empathy? Similar interests? A shared history?

"You have to be caring, and you have to understanding," Segel opined, "[and it] helps to be British."

Directed by John Hamburg, "I Love You, Man" is targeting an early 2009 release.

Tom Petty [ tickets ] and the Heartbreakers are in the midst of a summer-long tour that will keep them on the road into August. At the moment, it looks like things will wind up with a stop at the massive Outside Lands festival in San Francisco. On their last major outing, 2006's "Highway Companion" tour, Petty and the Heartbreakers regularly hosted Stevie Nicks [ tickets ] for several songs in their set. Our intrepid photographer Tim Mosenfelder snapped a couple of stops on that tour, and here they are.

The Game - The Game Breaks Down In Interview Reveals Suicidal Thoughts

Rapper THE GAME contemplated suicide in the days leading up to his March (08) jail term, because he couldn't handle the pressures of fame.

The Dreams hitmaker, real name Jayceon Taylor, was sentenced to 60 days behind bars in February (08), after pleading guilty to felony gun charges relating to an incident at a 2007 basketball game.

He eventually served just eight days of the sentence and was released on 10 March (08).

But his legal woes weren't the only thing bothering the MC - in the upcoming June (08) issue of XXL magazine, he reveals he was in such a dark place emotionally and physically, he almost chose to end his life.

He tells the American publication, "My life is f**ked up right now. I'm in a f**ked up place. My fans love me, and I know what they want but in a minute, I'm not gonna be physically capable of pleasing the world with music. Because my mind isn't right. People are driving me under God's good earth."

Later on, he adds, "Sometimes I wanna be at peace so bad that I wish myself off of the earth."

And according to AOL's The Boombox, the interview - which took place just a few days before he checked into California's Twin Towers Correctional Facility - ends with The Game breaking down, but the tears were for both the turmoil in his personal life and the apparent demise of the rap industry.

He explains, "The tears coming from my left eye are from my s**t that I'm dealing with in my life, and the tears down my right cheek are tears for hip-hop."

Nicole Kidman - Kidman Laughs Off Nude Photoshoot Rumours

Hollywood actress NICOLE KIDMAN has laughed off reports she is to follow in the footsteps of DEMI MOORE and BRITNEY SPEARS by posing naked and pregnant for a magazine shoot.

The Australian star is expecting her first child with husband Keith Urban and was rumoured to have striped off for a provocative photospread with legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier.

But Kidman admits that although she did take part in a shoot with Demarchelier, she did not bare all - and finds the idea of her posing naked while pregnant "hilarious".

She says, "'It's total nonsense. It was not that kind of a shoot.

'It's madness to think I did that or was even asked to do that. I'm just looking forward to having and caring for our baby."

Both Moore and Spears posed for controversial shoots for fashion magazines while they were pregnant, with the Ghost star gracing the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991 and the singer following suit in Harper's Bazaar in 2006.
